THE FURRY FRIENDS NETWORK AND PAWS MAKE FINANCIAL DONATION TO OPERATION CATNIP

Two local humane organizations, The Furry Friends Network and PAWS, have announced a combined donation of $1,500 to Operation CatNIP, a new spay/neuter program. Both organizations are members of the Central Pennsylvania Animal Alliance (CPAA), a coalition of local rescues and shelters seeking to create a no-kill community in the region. The Stray Cat Alliance and the Humane League of Lancaster, also members of the CPAA, have launched Operation CatNIP to reduce cat overpopulation and therefore reduce the number of animals euthanized in local shelters.

Operation CatNIP will conduct spay/neuter clinics throughout 2004 in the city of Harrisburg for cats of low-income households and homeless cats. The Stray Cat Alliance, which is managing the program, hopes to expand Operation CatNip Central PA to support other area programs and provide continued spay/neuter clinics targeted for low-income populations and feral cat caretakers. In addition to monetary donations, the alliance seeks volunteers to assist with the program.

"Statistics from the area show that far more cats are euthanized than dogs and that during spring and summer many mother cats are surrendered with their litters. We can significantly cut the euthanasia rate by first concentrating on specific populations of cats -- pet cats of the low income and feral cats," says Anita Frulliani, president of the Stray Cat Alliance.

"We hope that our donation will spur other organizations and individuals in our area to do the same," says PAWS President Christine Arnold. "Our area desperately needs to expand capabilities for spaying and neutering of companion animals and homeless cats if we are to end pet overpopulation and the untold suffering that accompanies it." PAWS is a local organization that runs spay/neuter and foster/adoption programs for cats and dogs.

The Furry Friends Network, a local non-profit organization that also runs a foster-based adoption program for unwanted cats and dogs, seeks to raise awareness of the importance of controlling the pet population through spaying and neutering. "There are so many older animals that are given up," says President Robin Scherer. "Adding to the population just makes the situation worse. We encourage everyone to send funds to help Operation CatNIP flourish."
